3 guancoche
(Sp. model spelled same [gwaŋkót∫e] < vanchoche, in Tarascan [a Meso-American Indian language of Southwestern Michoacan, Mexico], a net in which loads are carried, and in Sinaloa, Mexico, a blanket or bag made of the most ordinary sort of fiber)A gunnysack or large basket used in the Southwest and Mexico to carry items on a mule, horse, or burro. Santamaría glosses it as a thick, coarse, woven fabric used for lining and packing and in making gunnysacks. He indicates that the term is common in nearly all Latin-American countries, with some variations in spelling and meaning. Related forms: gancoche, gangocho, gangochi, guangochi, guangocho; all share the fundamental meaning of a coarse, crude, sparse cloth or loose robe; or a large sack, blanket, wrapped package, or container for heavy things made from such a fabric, all of which may be oversized or loose-fitting. It was probably influenced by the Mexicanism guango 'loose-fitting,' and has emigrated from Mexico to other countries. Whether or not cowboys or ranchers used such an artifact to transport goods, they probably knew some individuals who did and were aware of the term. -

9 Kier
Large metal vessels in which fabrics are boiled and bleached. They are of two main types - The open and the closed - and are constructed in a variety of forms. In both types the circulation is induced by boiling, or by the additional aid of an injector or a centrifugal pump. The high-pressure (closed) kier represents the main principle involved. There are two forms of circulation in the kier - one by the liquor passing up a central pipe, and then spreading over the goods, the other and more general type of circulation is by the liquor being pumped from the bottom of the kier to an outside superheater, up this, and so to the top of the kier, impinging on to a metal dish, which distributes the lye as a spray over the cloth, the pump at the bottom of the kier sucking it through the cloth and forcing it up the superheater. The kier is supplied with a thick perforated false iron bottom. The cloth when piled down (average amount in kier three tons) is then covered over with loose canvas and held down by heavy chains fastened to the inside of the kier. The kiers are fitted with temperature and pressure gauges - The pressure varying according to the type of bleach required, as well as the quantity of the cloth under treatment. -
10 Perching
A process for raising a nap on the back of heavy cotton fabrics such as moleskins, swansdown, etc. In the wool trade this term refers to the examination of fabrics in the open width, in a good light. The cloth is drawn over a "perch" or long roller fixed near to a window when all faults are shown up. The faults are repaired and imperfections made good by picking, hurling and mending. The perching is done before finishing. Picking consists in removing from the face of the cloth all hairs, kemps, straws, etc. Burling is removing from the back of the cloth all slubs, straws, etc., drawing out thick threads of warp and weft, opening the knots, and pushing loose ends and curls on to the back so that the face is clear of all irregularities. Mending is the inserting of yarn in places where threads of warp or weft are missing from the cloth. -
